Aldehydes & Ketones
Learning Goals
I can use proper IUPAC naming to name, write formulas and draw structures of aldehydes and ketones
I can differentiate aldehydes & ketones from other functional groups by their names and structural formulas
I can describe some physical properties of aldehydes and ketones
I can explain the types of chemical reactions that aldehydes and ketones undergo and what products are formed as a result.

LESSON OVERVIEW (SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS: B2.2, B3.1, B3.2, B3.3)
Hook:
Have students brainstorm a list of chemicals they already know that end with –one and –hyde. Common ones include hormones (testosterone, progesterone), organic solvents (acetone), and biological preservatives (formaldehyde)
Briefly discuss the common properties of aldehydes and ketones (i.e., smaller aldehydes have sharp, irritating odours, while larger ones have pleasant flowery odours) and use examples to illustrate the applications of these organic compounds in everyday life. For example, larger aldehydes and ketones are often diluted for use in perfumes and aromatherapy.

Teaching Strategy:
Use the following prezi presentation to give a brief lesson on the carbonyl functional group and its two constituents: aldehydes and ketones. This prezi is a great visual introduction to naming, properties, and reactions of aldehydes and ketones. There are checks for understanding integrated within the presentation which can be used as a formative assessment during the lesson.

Consolidation:
Venn Diagram: have students draw out a venn diagram to illustrate the similarities and differences between aldehydes and ketones. This can be handed in as an exit slip at the end of class.
