Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Learning Goals
I can use the following words correctly: saturated hydrocarbon, unsaturated hydrocarbon.
I can explain the difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons
I can use proper IUPAC naming to name, write formulas and draw structures of simple hydrocarbons.
I can describe some physical properties of aromatic hydrocarbons

Hook:
Traffic Light Naming: Students will be given 3 levels of questions on naming hydrocarbons. The levels range from green (easy), yellow (medium), and red (hard).
Once the answers are shared, the teacher will explain that the common name of this compound is benzene and is a member of a category of compounds called aromatic hydrocarbons.
Teaching Strategy:
Research activity: In groups of 2 or 3, students will use netbooks to research an aromatic compound and present their findings at the end of class.
The following questions can be used to guide their research:

Traffic Light Naming: Students will be given 3 levels of questions on naming hydrocarbons. The levels range from green (easy), yellow (medium), and red (hard).
- Green: This level will have three images of straight chained alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes. Students will be required to write the names of all three structures before they are allowed to proceed to the yellow question level.
- Yellow: This level will have three images of branched alkenes, alkynes, and a cycloalkane. Students will be required to write the names of all three before they are allowed to proceed to the red level.
- Red: This level will have an image of a benzene ring structure. Students are unfamiliar with this structure however, they can use prior knowledge of IUPAC naming to attempt to name this compound. Expected answer: 1,3,6-cyclohexatriene.

Research activity: In groups of 2 or 3, students will use netbooks to research an aromatic compound and present their findings at the end of class.
The following questions can be used to guide their research:
- What is the IUPAC name of this aromatic compound?
- Draw a structure of this aromatic compound.
- What are some interesting physical and chemical properties of this aromatic compound?
- Are there any health or environmental impacts associated with the use of these compounds?

Consolidation:
Snowball Activity: Each student will be given a post-it note on which they will be required to write down one new thing they learned. They will then crumple up the note and throw it across the room. They will then pick up another student’s crumpled post-it note and share it with the class.
