Traditional and Alternative Sources of Energy Prezi
To address some of the Societal Implications and Applications students can be asked to do a research project on energy and alternative energy sources (this activity has already been suggested under the Societal Implications and Applications section of this website). Students can be offered multiple platforms for end product format, but in here we introduce a Prezi format. Prezi's give students a more fun and interactive alternative to the generic PowerPoint. It makes it very easy to incorporate videos, pictures, text, and even audio. This gives an excellent way to differentiate for all of our different learners. Students can be also offered the choice to work in pairs or alone for inter- and intrapersonal learners. The reason we chose the Prezi format is to help students become fluent with this technology. Learning proper presentation techniques and technologies will help students in the future in professional and corporate environments.
Students can be divided into groups and each group is assigned a different type of energy source. Students will do research about their assigned energy source and construct a mind map. Energy sources to be discussed include: fossil fuels, solar, tidal, geothermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, wind, and biofuels. Topics students can explore include how their energy source works and/or is harvested as well as pros and cons. Ideally, students will have internet access to do research. Alternatively students can be made as collaborators on one Prezi and each student can update their own section/topic. At the end, each group/student can briefly present their points. If technology access is limiting, students can be given textbooks or other print resources.

How to Use Prezis in Your Classroom
1. Students need to make an account at Prezi.com.
2. Next students have to click on '+New Prezi' to being making their new Prezi. 3. Students should be given some instruction about the basics of how to work with Prezi as well as some time to get familiar with it. This YouTube clip is very short and gives an excellent introduction on how to use Prezi. 4. The exemplar below can be used to give students an idea of what is expected of them for this research assignment. |
