Introductory Activities
Sorting items as organic vs inorganic:
Give students a package with different images. The images will be of everyday objects that students come in contact with. The will be asked to sort the pictures into two piles: organic and inorganic.
What does "organic' mean?
Have students work in pairs to create a tweet of 144 characters of what they think organic and inorganic means. The tweets can be posted on a class hashtag where students' responses are shared with the class. This allows the teacher to gauge students' prior knowledge on what organic means. The teacher can then reveal the chemistry definition of organic vs inorganic and discuss what it means with the class.
