Types of Chemical Bonds
7C
Anything that you can see, touch, or taste is made of chemical bonds. Chemical bonds hold atoms together to form molecules and ionic compounds. Chemical bonds form when a group of atoms has a lower total energy. The two main kinds of chemical bonds are ionic and covalent bonds, which are created based on their attraction to electrons.
Hook:
Show a covalent substance like wax, and an ionic substance like salt. Ask the students why they have different properties. Students should mention something about electronegativities and the different characteristics.
Action:
Students must make a mind map that different types of bonds that can be created, and what rules must be fulfilled (octet rule), noting exceptions, examples, and characteristic properties.
Consolidate:
Gallery walk of all the mind maps. The teacher then summarizes all the pertinent points in a table form.
