Early Atomic Theories and Origin of Quantum Theory
Students are taught the history of the atom throughout high school. However, in grade 12, the developments show a progression to larger discoveries. Students will be reminded of scientists like J.J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, Max Planck & Albert Einstein.
The main discoveries during this time involved radioactivity and the role of photons.

Minds On:
Start with a discussion about what students remember about the history of the atom models. Then show the history of the atomic model song to help the students who do not remember the specifics of the history.

Action:
The teacher should use demos that show how electrons behave. For instance, show a cathode ray tube and talk about the discovery of the electron. Show the video that shows all the major developments in the atomic model during the 1900s. Then students will make a mind map that specifically shows the overlapping discoveries and related concepts that were developed by the scientists.

Consolidation
Students post completed mind maps around the class and complete a gallery walk.
