Electronegativity and Bond Polarity
9C
Electronegativity refers to the strength of electron attraction by an element. This is one of the main determinants in whether ionic or covalent. However, there can be polar covalent bonds which one atom still has a greater pull on electrons. There can also be non-polar covalent bonds, in which the atoms equally share the electrons. Students will learn how to distinguish one type of bond from the other.
Hook:
Show video of one-sided dog tug-of-war as an example of non-polar covalent bond.
Action:
Have students complete notes on electronegativity and bond polarity, then they must complete the worksheet on polar covalent versus non-polar covalent bonds.
Consolidation:
In think-pair-share format, have students compare their findings of bond polarity.
