Quantum Mechanics and Bonding Hybridization
11C
Different kinds of orbitals can overlap to create different kinds of bonds. Partially filled orbitals can also overlap to create bonds. Single covalent bonds consist of sigma bonds of the s orbitals. Pi bonds result through the overlap of parallel orbital lobes. Therefore, double and triple bonds consist of both pi and sigma bonds.
Hook:
Once again, use balloons to show how the overlap of orbitals would occur. Otherwise, a YouTube video can be used to show the exact same concept.
Action:
Have students work on Flash animation program of different kinds of hybridization orbitals. This takes students through all the various possibilities of different kinds of bonds. See external resources.
Consolidation:
Students complete a summary table of what they found in the overlap of the various orbitals. As well, students may complete question #1-6 from Nelson Chemistry 12 on page 238 for extra practice.
