1. Jigsaw Activity
In this activity, students are assigned into groups of 5 called 'home groups'. Within each group, they are assigned a number 1 through 5 that each corresponds with one topic: collision theory, chemical nature of reactants, concentration and surface area, temperature of the reactions system, and catalyst theory. The numbers are indicative of 'specialty groups', where students go to read and discuss their given factors. After which students return to their 'home groups' where they take turns explaining their group members what they have learned about in their 'specialty groups'. The home groups can then make a list on chart paper or a mind map to sum up the 5 topics as evidence of their learning. The button below links to a website that covers the 5 topics and can be used to obtain texts for the specialty groups to read if textbooks are not available.
2. Explaining Reaction Rates PDFThis PDF can be used like a PowerPoint to teach the concepts from this lesson. It does an excellent job covering the main ideas of collision theory, temperature of the reaction system, concentration and surface area, as well as catalyst theory.
