Addition Polymerization
Learning Goals
I can use the term polymerization correctly
I can explain the process of addition polymerization reactions
I can explain the difference between addition polymerization and condensation polymerization reactions
LESSON OVERVIEW (SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS: B2.1, B2.4, B3.4)
Lesson Hook:
Pose the question: What would life would be like if all the plastic materials in the world vanished? This can lead in to a discussion on the properties of plastics that make them so useful for us. The class discussion can be followed up with a video on "A World Without Polymers". Debrief the video by highlighting the similarities and differences in students' responses and the video. |

Teaching Strategy:
1. Polyethylene synthesis animation courtesy of Bruno Herreros. Show this video to students to illustrate the addition polymerization reaction. This animation will be very useful for the visual learners in the classroom.

Consolidation:
Human Chain Polymer Activity: Have students hold hands to link together to form a human chain of polymers. Students can also illustrate crosslinking by holding hands with members on the opposite chain. If this activity is not feasible due to weather, classroom size restrictions, or religious inclusivity issues with holding hands, showing a video would be a great alternative. |
